The Black Family Spatsizi Vacation from Brisbane to Vancouver

The Black Family Spatsizi Vacation: Brisbane to Vancouver

I reckon that memories forged with your kids are the most precious assets you can acquire in this life and there’s few better places to find them than on the Spatsizi Plateau. The plateau is in the deep north of British Columbia, where the kids’ phones don’t work, the climate is outside of your control and you’re definitely not the top animal in the food chain.

There you can find all the local critters great and small, from the tiniest squirrels, through to the cranky beavers, the restless wolves, the wild sheep and goats, the graceful caribou, the beautifully – odd shaped Moose, right up to the half-tonne Grizzley Bears. Fortunately this last one we saw stuffed at Smithers Airport, but still very scary looking.

At Spatsizi Lodge, we had seven days of guided water adventures with float planes, tinnies and canoes, forest walks (with bear spray), with mountains to climb, snowmen to roll, marshmallows to toast and lakes and streams to wade for some of the best-looking rainbow trout, grayling and arctic char my kids are ever likely to see. We had a ball, together.

View wasn't hard to take on our hill climb today.

John Black. Dad.
